What are the laws for e-bikes on Florida trails?

Riding Trails in Florida

We bet you are itching to go exploring, in a cost-effective way!  Well, at Mount Dora Pedego, we understand your longing for adventure, new vistas, and healthy fun. The world is opening up, to an even greater extent, and the beautiful landscapes and interesting trails of Florida are beckoning.

Can I Take An Electric Bike On A Trail In Florida?

The simple answer is yes. You can ride an electric bike on almost all trails throughout Florida. But it’s essential to do your research, and evaluate your personal needs, before making a bike purchase or planning an itinerary. You will want to ensure that the type of e-bike you have or are considering, allows you to safely explore trails.

Class 1 E-bike

A Class 1 electric bike has pedal assistance but not a throttle. For the pedal assistance (PA) to work, you need to be pedaling. It allows you to go up to 20 mph, which is a great pace for trails.

Class 2 E-bike

A Class 2 electric bike only has a throttle but not pedal assistance. Similar to the Class 1 e-bike, you can only go 20 mph.  What differentiates Class 2 is that you don’t need to be pedaling to use the throttle.

Class 3 E-bike

The Class 3 electric bike also has pedal assistance, but it is faster! Instead of maxing out at 20 mph, you can go up to 28 mph on a Class 3 e-bike.

What Type Of E-Bike Is Allowed On Florida Trails?

According to the Florida State Parks website, you can ride an electric bike on trails. But each local government enforces specific laws for each area. So before going on a trail trip, ensure you do your local research.

The majority of areas in Florida allow you to ride a Class 1 electric bike. As noted above, the Class 1 e-bike uses pedal assistance and goes up to 20 mph on a flat trail.

If you’re unsure if a specific trail allows e-bikes, check with the local government or even the local park’s website because the regulations will be stated online.
